The John Fisher School was founded by Archbishop Amigo, Archbishop of Southwark, in 1929; the original premises were at Duppas Hill in Croydon. The school moved in to its current location at Peaks Hill, Purley in 1931, and until 1977 it was a fee-paying boys Grammar School. In that year it became a four form of entry, all-ability school maintained by the London Borough of Sutton. On the 1st January 1992, it was incorporated as a Grant Maintained School.
At present there are 1030 students on roll, 243 of whom are Sixth Formers. In 1998 the School expanded to six forms of entry. In September 1999, it became a Voluntary-Aided school once more. In 2003 the school was designated a Sports College.
